After more than three decades on the bike, this seasoned cyclist has learned the hard way that you can’t always rely on memory or witnesses.
“I’ve had close calls with vehicles, animals, and even pedestrians. I got a camera over 10 years ago, as soon as they were small enough to fit on a bike. Because as the saying goes - if you don’t have proof, it never happened, nor can it be proven in court.”He records every ride now. The rider feels most vulnerable in wet weather, where conditions demand more attention - but many drivers seem to check out.
“People drive on autopilot in the rain. Add phones to the mix, and it’s dangerous.”A recent incident was reported to both the police and the driver’s company. While the police issued a warning and $150 fine, the company’s response was disappointing:
“They basically said, ‘Oh well, shit happens. Stay off the road.’”He believes countries like New Zealand still prioritise cars over cyclists.
“We need more public safety campaigns. E-bikes and scooters mean more riders than ever, but road culture hasn’t caught up.”He’s a supporter of platforms like UpRide:
“Knowing there are cameras out there and more people reporting - it can only lead to better awareness.”And his advice to other cyclists?
“Get a camera. Be hyper-aware. Not every country supports a cycling culture.”
Why Recording Matters
It's hard to believe some of the crazy behaviour that happens on the road, the best defence is crystal clear video that leaves no room for debate. You know the type. “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No-one would be that stupid” … except, unfortunately, we know different. As well as stopping another ‘he-said, she-said’ defence dead in its tracks, having video evidence helps everyone understand the how and why of those “what-the-hell-just-happened” moments. When things go wrong, video gives you the power to show exactly what happened. And when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous choice.Feel safe. Record your ride.
